I recently announced that I was going to be creating a few posts for those of you who have questions and are interested in blogging… And I have a few posts I’m currently working on but I couldn’t continue writing those until I got this off my chest…
Admittedly, I only started blogging for fun. It was a creative outlet for me because I truly just enjoy writing and sharing my thoughts. It was only until late 2018 when I began to consider blogging to make some money on the side. As many of you might know, I had quit my job to become a full-time stay at home mom and I missed doing something for myself.
Come 2019, I began re-branding and I changed everything completely. I’m not a very “tech-y” person to begin with so it took me about 5 months to get things figured out and set up the way I wanted. Within those 5 months I had switched from Blogger to Wix and then finally to what I now have, which is a fully self-hosted site. I transferred everything manually… It was so tedious and I could not have been more annoyed at myself.
But I’ve learned quite a bit and here’s what I want to tell you:
It’s not going to be easy.
And you are not going to get rich quick.
If you’re reading this, it’s because maybe you’ve been thinking about starting a blog of your own… Maybe you just want to be able to make some passive income… Or maybe you’re like me and just want to be able to help support your family while staying home with your babies.
Working from home sounds so great and fun until you realize that it takes serious self-discipline – especially when you have to work around your kids. Unless you have a passion for writing or some serious drive and desire for income; it might be more work than it’s worth.
So I’ll leave it up to you to decide how bad you really want it… But I promise you, something where you can make passive income (like literally make money while you sleep) and being your own boss is so, so worth it.
You will need to learn A LOT of things.
This isn’t a bad thing at all. In fact, this was probably the most exciting things about the whole process – and I was never a huge fan of school.
For me, it wasn’t just the whole webdesign aspect… Which, I’ll be honest, doing all of this reminded me of back in the day when I had my MySpace and I would use basic HTML to change my background and add music. I mean, it’s still kind of like that… But thankfully people sell really pretty themes that make it sooo much easier.
Anyways, I had to learn more about SEO (search engine optimization), how to drive traffic, how to actually monetize, and then how to build a community of my own who would actually want to support me. It’s a process that will take time… Especially if you don’t already have a community of your own and if you don’t have a very specific niche. Don’t worry though, I’ll explain that a little bit more in detail with the next blog post.
You’re gonna have to work for free for a bit.
This kind of ties back in with the whole “you’re not going to get rich quick” thing… But unless you’ve found someone that’s going to pay for you to become your own boss, you will have to work for free. Being boss means you call allll of the shots which is great – but you’re also the one who has to actually get the business going.
I’ll be honest for a lot of things, you might be able to get away with paying someone to do the work for you. Taking pictures, designing the logo, setting up your site – all that stuff. However, the experience of learning it all yourself is invaluable annnd it’s kind of expensive… So, you should save your money for later on when you’re getting ready to scale it. That being said, learn to decipher what’s actually worth investing your time in. This may be completely different for you than it would be for me or anyone else.
This may mean long nights, tired days, choosing to work on this over taking a nap or doing laundry. You will need to hustle. Especially for those of you moms that are currently staying home… Girl, I know the life… It’s easy to let the day get away from you if you don’t start time-blocking and getting disciplined. But if not now, then when?
You will need to invest.
You’ll need to invest both time and money – and I cannot stress this enough. You gotta spend money to make money – but how much you spend is really all up to you.
There are so many people out there that are so quick to sell you courses claiming to be the best of the best. But ask around…
You can get by using sites like Blogger and Wix but if you think that maybe one day you’ll want to monetize – (and I mean, come on – who doesn’t want to make some extra side money?) you’ll definitely want to use a self-hosted site… And to avoid doing the whole switch-around like I did, start with one from the very beginning!!
You need to break out from your shell.
We all have one.
I’ve always thought about myself as an extroverted introvert… Basically, I can perform extremely well while working a sales position in a retail store but I actually hate interacting socially when I’m out and about. The funny thing is though… The more that I interacted with newer bloggers, the more I realized this was a real issue that many of them have!
Whether you think that people will think what you’re doing is stupid, or that your writing sucks, or that they won’t care about what you have to say – IT DOESN’T MATTER.
Why? Because number one, you don’t actually suck. Number two, many people are just nosy and they like to hate. Number three and most importantly, you’ll be taking a step forward in the right direction.
I strongly encourage you to fall in love with the adrenaline rush that comes with stepping out of your comfort zone.
Most important of all, you just need to start.
If you’re truly thinking about starting a blog (or anything for that matter), I want to encourage you to ask yourself what’s holding you back?
We all have to start somewhere.
If I’m being honest, sometimes I think about if I had started sooner, where would I be now? But rather than focusing on the past, I try to especially think about where I’ll be in another 3 years… And that truly excites me.
Don’t worry about how much “competition” you think there is. Don’t worry that you’re “too late to the game”. There’s always room at the table and there will never be another person like you. Half of the fun of all of this is having a community that wants to know who you are!
I have so much more to share with you all, but I really hope that this kind of gave you some insight into the past couple of years into my life. If you have any questions – leave them below! I’d be happy to answer.
